I can only guess how many Filipinos in my age group can actually pull-off a Bob Dylan review. For starters, we don't appreciate Americana that much. Some of us may even confuse Brooks & Dunne for Barnes & Noble. Secondly, Dylan's got more than 30 studio albums under his belt. How the hell do you go back that far? What's more, how do you go about trying to understand his lyrics when they were created at the time the issues they tackle were still headline material? How do you even know what they are about?
So I won't attempt to write one. =) Or maybe just a bit.
His latest work entitled "Modern Times" garnered wide critical acclaim and shot straight to #1 in the US. Yahoo! even featured it on their Front Page. Although I;ve never really listened to him, the brouhaha surrounding the release seemed too much to ignore. So I downloaded it, played it, tried to understand whatever it is he was half-singing/half-murmuring and found out he really is a genius. People (who I take know what they're talking about) have compared his lyrics to Keats, Shakespeare, and Marlowe. Not that I've read any of them, but the affinity certainly makes it obvious how he's regarded as one of the most gifted wordsmiths in history.
Again, this isn't exactly a review. Just something I thought I could share. But I do recommend you listen to all of it. If you can buy it then please do so. Last thing: except for namedropping Alicia Keys, there's absolutely nothing "modern" about the album (the songs are mostly country, folk, and bluegrass).
